Setting Up a First Lesson

Before having the first lesson with a student, I like to have an interview over the phone to get to know the student and/or their parents/guardians better, and to discuss important details about what the student wants to learn, and what their schedule is like. I will ask about the kind of music a student might like, whether or not they play other instruments, and whether they already have any specific songs or skills they want to learn. This way I can prepare the first lesson according to the student’s interests.

I also offer the first lesson as a free trial so that students and their parents can get to know me and we can see if I am the right teacher for them. Parents are welcome to sit in on the lesson. We will also spend some time going over studio and payment policy, and discuss what materials the student will need for future lessons.
